Six years on, Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” has reportedly now risen to become the third most expensive film ever made.
Forbes has posted a report this week claiming that Disney has placed the total cost for the final film of the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy at £450.2 million/$593.7 million mark – putting it behind only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at £453.6 million and “Jurassic World: Dominion” £452 million as the third most expensive film ever made.
Those numbers are being shared with the public via U.K. tax records and reportedly, despite the high amount, the film came in under budget thanks to cheaper than expected post-production costs.
Disney is said to have banked a $103.8 million reimbursement from the UK Government which isn’t counted in the cost above and would bring the film’s costs below $500 million.
The figure doesn’t include marketing costs but also doesn’t take into account profits from foreign sales, home video, merchandising, etc. The film itself took in $1.077 billion at the box office.
The costs come ahead of Disney getting back into making more “Star Wars” films with “The Mandalorian & Grogu” opening May 2026 and “Star Wars: Starfighter” arriving May 2027.
