Marvel On More “Zombies,” Animation Rollout

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios released its four-episode “Marvel Zombies” series event on Disney+ this week to a tepid response so far.

With critics, the title pulled in a soft 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and a very ordinary 60/100 on Metacritic. Audience scores aren’t much better on those review aggregators at 84% and 5.0/10 respectively.

General consensus with the reviews seems to be that it fails to properly exploit its premise, playing more like a better than average episode of “What If”.

Previously, Marvel TV Head Brad Winderbaum has indicated that there are potential for more seasons if enough people watch. Speaking with Variety today, the show’s director Bryan Andrews says there is more than enough material for a second season:

“So much material. It’s crazy. There are other characters that people are like, ‘So-and-so is not even in it.’ Yeah, we know. We know what’s going on. We know how people got from A to B. You guys have no idea the insanity that’s just waiting around the corner if we get a chance.

Brad and I already know how the next one would start already. Our original idea was more medieval fantasy. It was set so far after the different kingdoms, fiefdoms and ruling factions have grown. Some of our old guard would be old. We were doing crazy shit. Brad wisely said people want to see their favorites and not see them so crazy. We rolled it back and didn’t time-jump so far forward.”

Andrews also indicates that the Shang-Chi western in the third season would be another episode of “What If” that could be expanded into a full episode.

Speaking with Discussing Film, Winderbaum also confirms Marvel’s strategy with their animated series going forward for the near future is for annual releases of new seasons of “X-Men 97” and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”.
