People have come out in force for “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the supernatural horror title shattering pre-release projections to an enormous $83 million domestic and $104 million overseas debut in 66 markets – a worldwide opening weekend of $187 million.
That would make the Patrick Wilson/Vera Farmiga-starrer the biggest horror debut of all time internationally (overtaking “IT: Chapter 2”), third biggest horror opening ever domestically (behind the two “IT” films), and the second biggest horror debut ever globally (behind “Alien: Romulus”).
It also marks the eighth No. 1 opening for Warners this year, and seventh to open above $40 million – that’s a first. Warners is now ranked No. 1 in domestic, overseas and global marketshare for this year so far with $1.73B, $2.04B international and $3.77B worldwide.
The film flattened everything else aside from the theatrical run of the “Hamilton” concert film which made an impressive $10 million in second place domestically – despite having been available on Disney+ for years.
Last week’s newcomers “Caught Stealing” and “The Roses” dropped to fifth and sixth with $3.2 million (down 59%) and $2.8 million (down 55%) respectively.
Internationally, Universal’s slow global rollout of “The Bad Guys 2” is paying off – the title now up to $191 million worldwide with several markets yet to open. It’ll likely come in behind the $250 million worldwide haul of the original, but it won’t be that far behind.
