On Friday came a report that Paramount was in negotiations to acquire film rights to one of the biggest game properties out there – Activision’s “Call of Duty” franchise.
Well it appears those talks have proven fruitful. THR reports that Activision and Paramount have signed the deal that will see the studio develop, produce and distribute a live-action film based on the game franchise.
The plan is to “thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series, while boldly expanding the franchise to entirely new audiences” according to a joint statement issued this morning.
Skdyance and new Paramoutn chief David Ellison says: “We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve.”
The aim initially is for a major feature film, however Paramount also reportedly has the rights to expand the franchise into a universe of multiple films & TV shows should they desire so.
“Call of Duty” remains among the most popular video game franchises in the world. 500 million copies of its various games have been sold over the years – and the top-selling game franchise in the U.S. for the past 16 years.
