“Coyote” Howls, “Dog Stars” Dim At Box-Office

Ketchup Entertainment’s rescue of the partly-animated “Coyote vs. Acme” from the vault at Warner Bros. Discovery looks like its paying off.

The title drew in rave critical reviews and landed a stellar A CinemaScore, while it led the newcomers this week at the box-office. The film is on track to debut in third place with $14 million – a record domestic start for indie Ketchup Entertainment.

In fact, by Sunday it could jump into second place – pushing “The Odyssey” which is slated to take in $14.6 million in its seventh weekend and push its total to $564 million. The main issue it’s facing is awareness which is sadly low for a film of this type.

The indie distributor doesn’t have big budgets, and so marketing spending was tight – limited to just $10 million, along with the $50 million they spent acquiring it after Warner was set to dump it for a tax break.

It handily beat Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars” which is tanking on arrival, with estimates at $8 million for a fifth-place debut. Along with poor critical reviews, it nabbed a poor C+ CinemaScore.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remains atop with a fifth weekend of $21 million – pushing it to nearly $900 million by Sunday. The movie’s worldwide numbers aren’t in yet but it is expected to overtake James Cameron’s “Titanic”.

“Insidious: Out of the Further” slipped to fourth place in its second weekend, dropping 63% to a haul of $9.3 million. The R-rated kiddie mascot horror film “Buddy” is looking to debut in seventh place with $4.7 million, while the Jason Statham-led “Mutiny” has fallen 67% in its second weekend to tenth place with $2.6 million.
