Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell are the stars of Kogonada’s life-traversing romance fantasy “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” two actors known for taking on famous Batman villain roles in recent years – Harley Quinn and The Penguin, respectively.
Out promoting the film together, the pair revealed they never discussed their shared history with Batman while filming the movie. Doing a sit-down interview with EW, the pair said that though they had talked about a lot of things, their time as Gotham City bad guys hadn’t come up once.
Turns out that they could have. As Farrell started to explain they exist in different universes, Robbie cut him off – saying they almost were on screen together in 2020’s “Birds of Prey” to which a visibly shocked Farrell says “No way! Really?”. Robbie explains:
“The first draft that Christina [Hodson] wrote of Birds of Prey, the villain was The Penguin, and then [director/writer] Matt Reeves said, ‘Don’t use the Penguin. I’m going to use him in my thing’. And so we swapped it to Black Mask [played by Ewan McGregor].”
Farrell then asks Robbie if she still has a copy of the draft with The Penguin in it, to which she says: “Yeah, it’s probably on my computer. You could read it.” He takes her up on it, saying: “Oh, good, I’d love to [read it]. That’d be so fascinating.”
It’s unclear if Robbie will return to the Harley Quinn role for the new DCU, the actress telling Variety today:
“I’ve heard nothing… You can’t get sick of Harley. I love her so deeply. I always had high hopes for her, like Batman – a character that lives on long after I’ve had a go at it. I feel like I need to share Harley.”
Farrell will reprise his take on The Penguin next year for Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II”.
