Everyone has varying opinions about what is Quentin Tarantino’s best directorial effort.
Over a span of nearly thirty years, he’s pumped out “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Jackie Brown,” “Kill Bill” 1 & 2, “Death Proof,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained,” “The Hateful Eight” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”.
For some, it will always be “Pulp Fiction,” others prefer some of the smaller films like “Jackie Brown”. But what about the man himself? What does he think is his best film?
During an expansive interview on The Church of Tarantino podcast, the two-time Oscar winner revealed which one is his personal favorite, which one he thinks is his best, which one represents his style the best, and which one he feels he served the material best as a director:
“‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ is my favorite, ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is my best. But I think ‘Kill Bill’ is the ultimate Quentin movie, like nobody else could’ve made it.
Every aspect about it is so particularly ripped, like with tentacles and bloody tissue, from my imagination and my id and my loves and my passion and my obsession.
So I think ‘Kill Bill’ is the movie I was born to make, I think ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is my masterpiece, but ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ is my favorite.
I think ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is my best script, and I think ‘Hateful Eight’ and ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’ are right behind.
But, there’s an aspect of ‘Hateful Eight’ that I actually think is probably my best directing of my material, i.e., the material is written and it’s solid. So it’s not like I have to create it, like ‘Kill Bill,’ it’s solid, it’s right there and I actually think it’s my best servicing [of] my material as a director.”
The discussion comes as Tarantino has been struggling to settle on his tenth and final film – forgoing a spin on “Star Trek,” the long-rumored “The Movie Critic”, and a sequel to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, which is now in production with David Fincher directing.
