Jason Bourne has found a permanent home.
NBCUniversal announced today that it has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series.
The acquisition reportedly grants them the rights in perpetuity – meaning any Bourne adaptation five, ten or fifty years from now will have to be done at Universal.
The deal cements the franchise’s future across NBCUniversal and sets the framework for new instalments of the franchise with Frank Marshall lined up to produce them.
WME began shopping the rights to the franchise and the rest of the Robert Ludlum library on behalf of the late author’s estate back in March after the rights exited the studio.
Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer says in a statement:
“Since its debut in 2002, the iconic Bourne franchise has reshaped the spy genre with groundbreaking films that set new standards for cinematic action. We’re energized to continue expanding the Bourne universe into the future with exciting new stories for global audiences.”
Ludlum published “The Bourne Identity” in 1980 and two decades on, filmmaker Doug Liman teamed with Matt Damon for the film adaptation which launched the franchise.
