“Mortal Kombat II” Trailer Sets Launch Record

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Pictures launched the first trailer for its “Mortal Kombat” sequel last Thursday and it seems the audience has responded very well.

Deadline reports that in its first 24 hours of release, the trailer clocked up 106.8 million worldwide views – setting a record for the biggest launch ever for a red-band trailer.

It wasn’t even close either – previous 24 hour records included 58.5 million for “The Suicide Squad,” 52 million for “Deadpool 2,” and 47 million for the 2021 “Mortal Kombat” film.

Warners was very prepared for the release, launching the trailer in 68 countries and 47 languages to feed the massive appetite for the property.

The first film opened in April 2021 during the pandemic and, despite a theatrical day and date release on HBO Max, still managed $23.3 million at the domestic box-office.

Questions are out there as to how well the sequel will go now it’s a full theatrical play with eyes looking to the way the second “Dune” doubled the opening weekend of the 2021 first one (also day-and-date on HBO Max).

“Mortal Kombat II” opens in cinemas in October.
