Marvel Helped “Sinners” With Costumes

Warner Bros. Pictures

Marvel Studios’ “Blade” remains a project stuck in limbo, the film having gone through multiple directors, writers and incarnations during its long development cycle.

The closest the film came to moving forward was a version set in the 1920s with Yann Demange helming and Mia Goth playing a vampire goddess seeking the blood of Blade’s daughter.

Enough work got done that a large train track set was built, and a bunch of period costumes were designed and created by costume designer Ruth Carter and her team.

Plans for that incarnation of the project were dropped, and the film remains stuck in limbo, but it turns out all those costumes they created found a use elsewhere.

During an interview with ScreenCrush, “Sinners” producer Sev Ohanian revealed that many of the costumes used by background actors and extras in the movie were the ones originally planned for “Blade”:

“Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting. At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as ‘Sinners.’

She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, ‘Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow, and Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price.”

Though background actors got Marvel cast-offs, the main characters of “Sinners” all had newly created, original costumes. “Sinners” is out on Max as of today, while there’s still no indication of when “Blade” will head into production.
