Netflix has cancelled two of its recent series – “The Residence” and “Pulse” – after just one season each.
The better of the two by a long shot, Shondaland’s “The Residence” was a comedy-murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba as quirky detective Cordelia Cupp who has to solve the murder of the White House’s Chief Usher that took place during a US-Australia State Dinner.
The title debuted to 6.4 million views and spent four weeks on the chart, ultimately not enough for the streamer to justify moving forward with a follow-up season for what is a high-cost series.
Part of the blame is being attributed to “Adolescence,” which premiered a week earlier and overshadowed everything that came in the weeks after. The anthology nature of the series led to discussions about trying to produce a cheaper second season in a different setting, but they didn’t pan out.
“Pulse” was released to mixed/poor reviews and peaked at 8.5 million in the Netflix Top 10 in its second week before quickly dropping off. A slew of recent medical dramas, including the success and acclaim of HBO’s “The Pitt,” arguably didn’t help.
Willa Fitzgerald starred as a third-year resident at a Level 1 trauma center Miami who is unexpectedly promoted after beloved chief resident Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended.
In addition, the streamer has also hit pause on its dark comedy anthology series “No Good Deed” with no plans for a second season, but no official cancellation either.
Netflix only really cancelled one series in the first half of 2025 – the Noah Centineo-led “The Recruit”. Otherwise, several of its shows have seen renewal orders taking them at least another season or two including “Bridgerton” through to Season 6, “The Diplomat” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” through to Season 4, and “Tires” and “My Life with the Walter Boys” through to Season 3.
