Filmmaker Sean Baker’s “Anora” took home Best Picture at this year’s Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) Awards. The film also shared in the best leading performance (Mikey Madison) and best supporting performances (Yura Borisov) honors.
Other winners included “A Real Pain” for best screenplay and best supporting performance (Kieran Culkin), Marianne Jean-Baptiste winning best leading performance for “Hard Truths,” and Mohammad Rasoulof winning best director for “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”.
“Flow” won best animated film, “No Other Land” won best documentary and “All We Imagine as Light” best foreign language film. “The Brutalist” won best production design, “Challengers” won best score, “Nickel Boys” took best cinematography and best editing (sharing the latter with “September 5”).
Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter was the recipient of this year’s Career Achievement Award.
The handouts came as Jacques Audiard’s Mexico-set musical drama “Emilia Perez” triumphed at this weekend’s European Film Awards – taking five honors for 2024 including best film, best actress (Karla SofÃa Gascón), best director, best screenplay and best editing.
Other winners were Abou Sangare for best actor in “Souleymane’s Story,” while the animated and doco honors were the same as LAFCA (“Flow,” “No Other Land”).
