Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient will lead the cast of “The War Between The Land And The Sea,” a new “Doctor Who” spin-off announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
Disney Branded Television and BBC are producing the series, which hails from showrunner and executive producer Russell T. Davies who is co-writing it with Pete McTighe (“A Discovery of Witches”).
In the series, a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing itself to humanity. An international crisis is triggered, and with the entire population at risk – UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.
The series will feature the return of Sea Devils which Davies says is a “huge, muscular, thrilling drama”. Redgrave and Devrient will be reprising their roles as UNIT director Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim respectively.
Filming on the five-part series will begin next month and, like the main series, is set to air exclusively on Disney+, BBC One, and BBC iPlayer. The project marks Mbatha-Raw’s second time with “Doctor Who” after a recurring role as companion Martha Jones’ sister Tish, while Tovey previously guest starred in a David Tennant-era Christmas special as midshipman Alonso Frame on the starship Titanic.
Dylan Holmes-Williams, who directed the recent ‘Who’ season episodes “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble,” will direct the series. Davies, Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter executive produce.
