“The Marvels” Targets A Quiet Opening

The earliest box-office projections for Marvel Studios and Disney’s “The Marvels” movie are in ahead of the film’s release next month and the outlook is… not good.

Box-Office Pro reports that the film is on track for an expected domestic opening of $50-75 million, much lower than Captain Marvel’s $153.4 million.

In fact, that figure is considerably behind the openings of both “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($104 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($118 million).

The site also indicates the earliest presales for the film are significantly behind are low – 69% behind ‘Guardians,’ 72% behind ‘Quantumania’ and 42% behind “Eternals” at the same point in their cycles.

The MCU has struggled to maintain the momentum of its first three phases in the years since “Avengers: Endgame” even as their films are still often very high on end of year charts.

That said, “The Marvels” faces some tough issues – the inability of the film’s trio of stars to promote it is expected to have an impact, whilst demand for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film is also likely hurting early pre-sales.

As such the film is still weeks off and has time to make up at least some ground.
