“One Piece” Ace Casting Rumor Emerges

With Netflix handing out a quick renewal for the second season of the live-action “One Piece” series, attention has turned towards whom might be appearing in the next season.

The first season adapted almost all the East Blue Saga, so it stands to reason the second will translate much of the second saga of the manga – the Arabasta saga.

If that’s the case, it will introduce a variety of new characters, including a fire-wielding swashbuckler named Portgas D. Ace. Ace first appears looking for Luffy on the eponymous desert island – and has a key connection to the young wannabe King of the Pirates.

Whilst there’s no word as yet regarding any potential second season casting, fans have already guessed that actor and musician Emery Kelly (“Big Shot,” “Alexa & Katie”) is up for the part.

The rumor first emerged on Reddit (via This Was TV) where online scavengers found Kelly has Ace as his profile picture on Instagram, whilst series star Inaki Godoy (who plays Luffy) and showrunner Matt Owens both follow Kelly.

It may seem like a stretch, but this is exactly how the fandom deduced Emily Rudd was playing Nami in the first season, and the Reddit board for the series has had a surprisingly good track record in terms of casting for the series.

The one obvious bit of dream casting from fans, who’ve already begun campaigning, is for Jamie Lee Curtis to be cast as Dr. Kureha. It’s a role Curtis, a big fan of the anime, has mentioned in several interviews as one she could play.

Show producer Marty Adelstein indicated the other week that all the scripts for the second season are already complete, suggesting production is aiming to resume once the strikes are over.

Creator Eiichiro Oda previously hinted at the arrival of a fan-favorite character in his renewal announcement video, indicating adorable doctor character Tony Tony Chopper would be joining the crew next season.
