Earlier this week came the news that Marvel Studios would be releasing an alternative version of its 2022 Halloween special “Werewolf by Night”.
The original special, which saw famed composer Michael Giacchino going behind the camera as director, was released in black and white with a visual style that served as an obvious homage to Universal classic monster movies of the 1930s and 1940s.
Gael GarcÃa Bernal led the cast as Jack Russell, aka the Werewolf by Night, alongside Laura Donnelly as monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone, Richard Dixon and Harriet Sansom Harris. The special also introduced Man-Thing to the MCU.
The new alternative version will be in “vibrant color,” and Giacchino has spoken about the new take on Twitter, saying this version will directly homage the classic British Hammer horror movies of the 1960s and 1970s:
“We spent a lot of time working on this color version. We wanted to pay homage to the incredible vibrant color in horror films like the ones Hammer made. A whole new look for #werewolfbynight.”
“Werewolf by Night” was originally shot in color but if the Hammer homage is correct, it’s likely to put the emphasis on certain colors more than others – especially reds.
The color version of “Werewolf by Night” will debut on the Disney+ service on October 20th. The original black-and-white version of the special is also now streaming on Hulu.
