Kenneth Branagh’s third Poirot film “A Haunting in Venice” is coming in slightly ahead of expectations with a $5.3 million haul on Friday including $1.2 million in previews.
As such, the film is now on track for a three-day debut of $14 million – a better start than the second Poirot’s “Death on the Nile” at $12.8 million but way behind his first with “Murder on the Orient Express” debuting to $28.6 million in 2017.
The film is the best-reviewed of Branagh’s Hercule Poirot films by a fairly large margin, and has the benefit of IMAX and PLF ticket upcharges. It also has a tighter budget at $60M – just two-thirds that of ‘Nile’ at $90 million.
The movie is still expected to take the top spot and knock off “The Nun” sequel which is tipped to drop around 61% in its second weekend outing with a decline down to $12.8 million for the three-day.
“The Equalizer 3” will likely target third with a three-day of $7.3 million – a drop of 39% in its third weekend. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is expected to come fourth with $4 million (a 60% drop) and “Barbie” in fifth with $3.6 million.
