Netflix Paying Royalties To German Creatives

Netflix has reportedly agreed to pay creatives in Germany additional royalties based on the success of its local series productions.

Payments to talent working in front and behind the camera on German Netflix series will be in addition to wages covered by production companies, and will be based on the number of streams made by the series on the platform.

The streaming giant signed a joint remuneration agreement with both Germany’s leading service sector union United Services Union (Verdi), and the German Federal Actors Association (BFFS).

Netflix dubs it a “milestone for the film and television industry” and ensures that creators and performers benefit financially from their collaboration with the streaming platform.

Creatives that qualify for the performance-based royalties include directors, cinematographers, actors, editors, make-up artists, along with set, costume, and sound designers.

The amount to be paid is based on the worldwide number of ‘completers’ – households that have watched 90% of a series’ season.

Netflix recently signed a similar agreement in Sweden, and similar agreements are expected to be signed across other EU member states shortly

Netflix has produced several German series, including international sensation “Dark” along with “Babylon Berlin,” “Barbarians” and “Unorthodox”.
