Gunn: I Ain’t Making “Young Superman”

Warner Bros. Pictures

Filmmaker and DC Studios chief James Gunn seems to be sick of people dubbing his upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film a “young Superman” movie.

Gunn took to Threads this week to clear up the assumption about the film after a fan asked him if his “young Superman movie” was set in the past to which he responded: “I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie, just a Superman movie!'”.

The assumption, which seems to confuse the terms ‘younger’ and ‘young’, has been floating around ever since Gunn shifted leads from currently 40-year-old Henry Cavill to 30-year-old David Corenswet.

In other words, Corenswet will actually be a few months older than Cavill was when he shot “Man of Steel”. In addition, Gunn’s own comments in December in which he states the story will be “focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life” but not being an ‘origin story’ quickly led to the ‘young Superman’ label popping up.

Others have expressed concern the film will boast too many characters and so won’t spend enough time on Superman himself, to which Gunn recently replied: “I don’t understand this fear. There are less characters than in 40-Year-Old Virgin. Did you think Steve Carell got enough time?”

Corenswet was announced as the new Superman along with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane with other characters like Lex Luthor and The Authority to be cast, whilst several other roles have already been filled.

“Superman: Legacy” expects to begin filming in early 2024 ahead of a July 11th 2025 release.
