Amazon has reversed course and has effectively ‘unrenewed’ previously ordered second seasons of both the twisty sci-fi series “The Peripheral” and its period baseball drama “A League of Their Own” – effectively cancelling both series.
The retail giant and streamer have cited work stoppages caused by the Hollywood writer’s and actor’s strikes as the reason for the series not moving forward. It would seem “The Peripheral” marks the first show to have a renewal order rescinded with the strikes being cited as the reason.
The Chloe Grace Moretz-led “The Peripheral” follows a woman who discovers a secret connection to an alternate reality. Prime Video picked up a second season in February just two months after the first finished. Pre-production began in early May, just as writers went on strike.
That it got a second season order, even if only for a shorter six episodes, came as a surprise as it reportedly cost close to $175 million for its eight-episode first season but only had ‘lukewarm’ audience engagement.
Meanwhile, “A League of their Own,” the queer-themed reboot of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film, was originally going to be cancelled after one season. However, an outcry led to a four-episode second season order to wrap up storylines.
Sony Pictures Television reportedly plans to shop ‘League’ with the hopes that the series can find a new home for season two. Scripts for all four episodes were completed before the writer’s strike and pre-production had begun.
