Filmmaker Michael Chaves says his upcoming sequel to “The Nun,” the follow-up to the 2018 spin-off of “The Conjuring” franchise, goes to some of the darkest and certainly most violent places the franchise has seen to date.
The new film begins with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) four years after the events of the first installment. Here she has moved from Romania to Italy in order to live a quiet life in a convent.
Valak (Bonnie Aarons), however, isn’t done with her. Corin Hardy helmed the first film which became a major success, grossing $365.6 million from a budget of $22 million and so a sequel was inevitable.
It took time, but it was finally made a few years later and Chaves, speaking with SFX magazine, explained the tonal balancing trick that came with the new film:
“I think that this does get darker. Even audiences have said this, when we screened it. It is definitely more violent than what they expected from a Conjuring movie.
It’s always a delicate balance. It’s definitely scary, it’s 100% delivered on that. Just as horror audiences have developed the appetite for horror, the appetite for violence has started to increase, and so there are some violent elements in this.”
Chaves also says this isn’t the end of the road for Valak: “There’s a line in the movie: ‘Demons are infinite.’ I like the idea that she’s always been here in different forms. I think that there’s still more stories of Valak the demon nun to be told.”
Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper penned the script for the new film which opens in cinemas on September 8th.
