“The Marvels” Director On Superhero Fatigue

Marvel Studios

Fairly often these days the notion of ‘superhero fatigue’ comes up. It has only increased as the once seemingly unassailable superhero film genre that produced countless hits seems to be stumbling around rather blindly of late – some still hitting big, but others falling flat on their face.

Filmmakers have also commented on it in interviews. DC Studios chief James Gunn says the concept is real but is less to do with tiredness over the genre and more to do with bland spectacle filmmaking.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” producer Chris Miller, on the other hand, dismissed the concept, saying: “it’s ‘a movie that feels like a movie I’ve seen a dozen times before’ fatigue”.

“Candyman” filmmaker Nia DaCosta, who joins the superhero world with Marvel Studios’ upcoming “The Marvels” film, tells Total Film she’s well aware that superhero fatigue is very real thing right now:

“I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists. The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that [‘The Marvels’ is] really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

Producer Mary Livanos also spoke about what makes their new film different:

“‘The Avengers’ movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel. Usually, you wait for characters to show up all together in ‘Avengers’ movies. We were excited to design a team-up featuring characters that women from all walks of life could relate to.”

This sequel to “Captain Marvel” teams Brie Larson’s superhero with Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau from “WandaVision” and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan from “Ms. Marvel”.

Whether the film can match the $845 million worldwide of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” let alone the over $1 billion success of “Captain Marvel,” we’ll have to wait and see.

“The Marvels” is set to open in cinemas on November 10th.
