Talk of a potential sequel to 2014’s Tom Cruise-led time-looping sci-fi action vehicle “Edge of Tomorrow” (aka. “Live. Die. Repeat.”) has been swirling around for almost a decade now.
The Doug Liman-directed film starred Cruise as a PR guy forced by his superiors to join a landing operation in a ground war against aliens – only to find himself experiencing a time loop as he tries to find a way to defeat the invaders.
Development on a sequel began almost immediately after the first film hit cinemas, but progress has been incredibly slow, and Cruise has been busy of late with “Mission: Impossible” sequels, among other films.
Actress Emily Blunt, who co-starred with Cruise in the film, has now confirmed to Happy Sad Confused podcast that she’s read an actual script for the sequel but doesn’t think the film will happen anytime soon:
“I wish there could be one. Have I ever read a script? Yes, we did. There was one that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me. I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need? Come on. Come back to the side where you can be a…wasn’t he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Incredible. I’m so ready. I’m not the impediment, I promise.”
She may get her wish as, with the underperformance of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” that film’s upcoming second part could be the final Mission we get for a while.
“Edge of Tomorrow” launched to rave reviews but tepid box-office with $370.5 million off a $178 million budget. The film was subsequently ‘discovered’ by many on home video and is now something of a cult hit.
However, Cruise and ‘Edge’ co-writer Christopher McQuarrie have already indicated they’re working on an original “gnarly movie” as their potential next project once ‘Dead Reckoning Part Two’ wraps.
