During the back half of the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” a fan campaign quickly sprang up asking for the possibility of the spin-off series “Star Trek: Legacy”.
That spin-off show would continue the adventures of the younger crew of the new Enterprise (NCC-1701-G) with its Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), first officer Raffaela ‘Raffi’ Musiker (Michelle Hurd), captain’s counselor Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and several of the other younger characters introduced.
At the same time, it could incorporate at least some of the ‘Next Generation’ cast. Showrunner Terry Matalas previously indicated he has spoken with “Star Trek” franchise chief Alex Kurtzman about it, but nothing was in development at the time.
Now, “Star Trek” series alum and director Jonathan Frakes has spoken with Variety about how likely it is the series will get made. He’s an optimist he says and believes could get made because of the strong fan reaction:
“I think they can’t deny not only the fan reaction, but the fact that the numbers put the show at the Top 10 on the streaming charts. And that season of Star Trek: Picard was arguably the among the best seasons of any Star Trek – I think we all agree on that. I mean, Star Trek fans are loyal.
It’s not millions and millions of people, and it’s not the youngest fandom in the world. But I am an eternal optimist, and I believe in a perfect world, they will find the assets and the energy and hire Terry to put together this Legacy show and that will, in fact, come to fruition.”
Previously Matales has insisted there are currently no plans to develop “Star Trek: Legacy” as Paramount has enough series in the works as it is.
The streamer is currently airing a second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” with a third on the way, has a fourth season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” due later this year, has a fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” early next year, and has both a “Section 31” movie and a “Starfleet Academy” series in development.
