Where the “Spider-Man” franchise will go from here is not clear. In the wake of the success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it’s obvious Sony Pictures aims to continue the franchise.
Nonetheless, the film closed out with a logical ‘endpoint’, meaning a fourth film could go in several directions. Now actor Thomas Haden Church, who played Spidey villain Flint Marko/Sandman twice on screen, says he’s heard one such possibility.
Church first took on the role of the main antagonist opposite Tobey Maguire’s hero in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3” in 2007. After that film, discussions of a fourth movie directed by Raimi swirled around before the studio opted to reboot the series with the two Andrew Garfield-led “The Amazing Spider-Man” movies.
Then the franchise came full circle with Church, Maguire and Garfield all reprising their roles for 2021’s ‘No Way Home’. Meanwhile, Raimi joined the MCU at the helm of the “Doctor Strange” sequel.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Church says he’s heard some chatter:
“There’s always been some kind of… I’ve heard rumors… that Sam Raimi was going to do another [Spider-Man movie] with Tobey [Maguire], and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo.”
Whilst no official plans have been released for “Spider-Man 4,” it’s not the first time talk of Raimi or Maguire returning for the next entry has come up since ‘No Way Home’ was released. Even so, Tom Holland is still expected to remain the lead of the next live-action Spider-Man film whenever it goes forward. At last report and according to Holland himself, he had been having meetings with Sony about it but those conversations are now on ‘pause’ due to the strikes.
