Singer and actress Jane Birkin who reached fame first in the late 1960s as Serge Gainsbourg’s lover, has died at the age of 76. She was found dead at her home in Paris.
Birkin’s film debut was in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 classic “Blow-Up” and had notable turns in two Agatha Christie adaptations – 1978’s “Death on the Nile” and 1982’s “Evil Under the Sun”.
She also earned three Cesar nominations for her work in later arthouse titles including “La Belle Noiseuse” and “The Pirate”. Though born in the UK, she achieved fame singing the explicit song “Je t’aime… moi non plus” which turned her into a household name.
The French culture minister announced the news on Sunday following the reports first breaking in Le Parisien newspaper and BFM television.
She and Serge Gainsbourg, who were officially together thirteen years, had a child together – actress, singer and director Charlotte Gainsbourg. Birkin also became a fashion icon with Hermes’ Birkin bag named after her.
Birkin also had a daughter, Kate Barry, with late James Bond composer John Barry and another, Lou Doillon, with French director Jacques Dillon. She prevously suffered a stroke in 2021 from which she recovered.
