The Summer box-office has been a mixed bag with some success stories like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and some high-profile disappointments like “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”.
The result is, per Comscore as of May 1st-July 9th, the summer domestic box office is sitting at $2.1 billion so far – 6% behind the same period last year.
All eyes are now on the gushingly reviewed “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” which kicks off its run on Wednesday worldwide and is expected to take in a global five-day haul of $250 million worldwide – $90 million domestic and $160 million overseas from 70 markets.
Previews begin at 2pm on Tuesday ahead of opening in 4,300 locations in the U.S. by Wednesday. With a budget of $291 million blown out due to being heavily impacted by the pandemic, the project faces a serious challenge to hit profitability. Still, $250 million is a very strong start to achieve those ambitions.
In fact, it’s an opening about on par with last year’s “Top Gun: Maverick” which did $256 million worldwide in three days before having legs that lasted for months and ultimately carried it to $1.5 billion globally.
The prior ‘Mission’ entry, the sixth film “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” scored 72% of its domestic gross after its opening weekend, so this is expected to ultimately outdo that film’s $220 million domestic haul.
Internationally, ‘Fallout’ made $173.1 million in its opening weekend – helped considerably by $74 million from China – a number that’s not expected to be repeated in the Middle Kingdom this time, but how it will fare there is being watched with keen interest (it opens there on Friday).
