Neon has acquired domestic distribution rights to Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” biopic with plans to release the drama in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day.
The project marks Mann’s first film in eight years, his last being 2015’s “Blackhat” starring Chris Hemsworth. The master filmmaker is known for such cinematic classics as “Heat,” “The Insider,” “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Thief” and “Collateral”.
Adam Driver stars as Enzo Ferrari alongside Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura Ferrari. Shailene Woodley, Jack O’Connell, Sarah Gadon, Patrick Dempsey and Gabriel Leone co-star.
The story is set during the summer of 1957 and follows Enzo Ferrari as he deals with his company on the verge of bankruptcy, a stormy marriage and the death of his son. Against that backdrop, Ferrari wagers everything on one race – the 1,000-mile trek across Italy, the Mille Miglia.
The film’s composer Daniel Pemberton recently spoke with Collider and says the film “really gets you into the madness of what motor racing is” including not just its genesis but the toll it takes on people’s lives in terms of risk: “Around that period, your friends are dying all the time. The film deals with a lot of grief as much as it does racing.”
“Ferrari” is believed to be a potential Oscar contender and STX Entertainment and its partners will distribute the movie internationally.
