We’re less than two weeks away from Barbenheimer – the weekend where Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” are opening against each other in an event dubbed ‘Barbenheimer’ which has inspired countless memes.
Whilst the rivalry has been played up a bunch, the competing film campaigns have been remarkably friendly and relatively supportive of each other so far, and it’s being reflected in pre-sales, according to AMC.
The exhibition giant says plenty of moviegoers are deciding to watch both films on the same day they open on July 21st. The company says more than 20,000 AMC Stubs members have already purchased tickets to see “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day.
“Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy is all for the double feature, telling La Vanguardia: “I can’t wait to see Barbie. I love Margot Robbie, I love Ryan Gosling….My advice would be for people to go see both [Barbie and Oppenheimer], on the same day.”
The news comes as “Barbie” held its world premiere yesterday with rave reviews, high praise in particular for Ryan Gosling as Ken, Robbie’s work, the film’s production design and the film’s script by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. Warner Bros. Pictures has opted to keep the hype going by releasing a clip involving Gosling’s Ken singing which you can see below.
Meanwhile, Universal Pictures has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette for “Oppenheimer,” which can also be seen below.
