Filming officially wrapped on Eli Roth’s video game-to-film adaptation “Borderlands” two years ago back in June 2021, yet the film still has no firm release date and no finished footage has been revealed to the public at large.
Now, some eagle-eyed Redditors have spotted that the film’s final writing credits have been released on the official WGA site almost three weeks ago – and with it came a crucial name change along with some key additions that have drawn attention.
“Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us” TV series creator Craig Mazin has long been attached as the main writer on the movie alongside Roth. Now Mazin’s name is gone, replaced by the name ‘Joe Crombie’ alongside Roth as the two official writers on the project.
There is no Joe Crombie listed on the IMDb, the closest name being author Joe Abercrombie, but the official WGA site is unlikely to make such a naming error. More likely is the speculation that it’s a writing pseudonym Mazin is using rather than his real name. That is not confirmed however.
The film certainly has had an interesting post-production phase with reshoots taking place last Summer that hired Gary Ross (“Pleasantville,” “The Hunger Games”) for rewrites. The film was then reportedly test-screened in November leading to Lionsgate requiring more work to be done.
Then in January this year a report emerged indicating “Deadpool” and “Terminator: Dark Fate” helmer Tim Miller had come onboard and amicably take over as director for two weeks of additional reshoots with Zak Olkewicz writing new pages.
Ross and Olkewicz aren’t the only writers who’ve taken a shot at the script either with the final WGA credits citing them along with Aaron Berg, Oren Uziel, Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Chris Bremner and even “The Idol” series co-creator Sam Levinson as all having contributed ‘Additional Literary Material: (not on-screen)’ to the film.
In the film Cate Blanchett plays Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past who reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Atlas (Edgar Ramirez).
She forms an alliance with an unexpected team – former elite mercenary Roland (Kevin Hart), pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) and her rhetorically challenged protector Krieg (Florian Munteanu), the persistent wiseass robot Claptrap (Jack Black), and mentally unstable scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis).
These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. Erik Feig, Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing.
