“Insidious” Takes Down Indiana Jones

Universal Pictures

Sony’s horror-thriller “Insidious: The Red Door” is coming in ahead of expectations, with the film pulling in $15.2 million on its opening day (including $5 million in previews).

As such, it has blown past projections and now looks like it will comfortably land atop the box-office this weekend with a projected $31 million haul – pushing “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” to second place in its second weekend.

Reviews for the film have been rather terrible – critics have given it a 37% at Rotten Tomaotes whilst the CinemaScore is just a C+ indicating poor word of mouth. Then again, horror as a genre often has poor CinemaScores.

With a production budget of just $16 million, the film could potentially be in profit before its first week is done.

Meanwhile, Indiana Jones’ final adventure earned $7.6 million on Friday, with competitors projecting a second weekend total of around $26 million – a fall of about 56% which is the same drop-off number as “No Time to Die” had in its second weekend.

That film had little to go against, whereas Indy is about to face stiff competition in the coming two weeks.

“Sound of Freedom” will be third with $15 million, whilst the R-rated ensemble comedy “Joy Ride” looks to have a soft start with around $7-9 million for its opening weekend. Its B- CinemaScore also isn’t great.
