John Woo Talks Filming “Silent Night”

Silent Night Productions Inc.

Twenty years since “Face/Off” and “Hard Boiled” filmmaker John Woo directed his last American feature, the poorly received Ben Affleck-led sci-fi thriller “Paycheck,” Woo returns to the fold with the currently in post-production “Silent Night”.

Joel Kinnaman stars as Godlock, a father on a mission to avenge his young son who was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve. Shot and nearly killed while in pursuit of the murderers, Godlock vows revenge by any means necessary.

Kid Cudi, Harold Torres and Catalina Sandino Moreno also star in the film which was shot in Mexico City a year ago and is already famous for one key gimmick – it features no dialogue.

Speaking with Vulture recently, Woo explained how he went about telling a story without dialogue:

“Very interesting movie. The whole movie is without dialogue. It allowed me to use visuals to tell the story, to tell how the character feels. We are using music instead of language. And the movie is all about sight and sound.

The budget was a little tight, and the schedule was tight, but it made me change my working style. Usually, for a big movie, a studio movie, we shoot a lot of coverage, then leave it to the cutting room.

But in this movie, I tried to combine things without doing any coverage shots. I had to force myself to use a new kind of technique. Some scenes were about two or three pages, but I did it all in one shot.”

Robert Archer Lynn penned the script, while Erica Lee, Basil Iwanyk, Lori Tilkin, and Christian Mercuri will produce. The film doesn’t currently have a release date.
