“Dial of Destiny” Missed The Box-Office Mark

Lucasfilm

The soft $60 million domestic three-day debut for Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” has been repeated overseas with the movie also coming in on the low side of projections at $70 million from 52 international territories – bringing its worldwide opening weekend total in at $130 million.

The fifth installment of the franchise is said to be performing well in Europe, bar France due to rioting, whereas the Latin America and Asia Pacific regions are being dubbed “lackluster” says Deadline.

The film still managed to open in first place in numerous markets. It also opened in China, where not much was expected or delivered as it took in just $2.3 million there. IMAX brought in $11 million globally, $5 million of which came from overseas.

Still, comparisons are being made to the more roughly audience received “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull”, and the results aren’t good. That movie managed to debut to a $272 million global start – just over double what ‘Dial’ debuted to.

Domestically it not only opened far behind the only real “Star Wars” misfire with “Solo: A Star Wars Story” at $84 million but actually will debut to less than “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” earlier in June with that film taking in $61 million in its three-day domestic start.

Even “The Flash,” a film being written off as the biggest bomb of the Summer, still managed to make $139 million in its worldwide debut – and it cost $100 million less to make.

The trade also reports that according to their key sources, the touted production budget figure of $250-295 million is actually less than the $300 million+ the film ended up costing to make – and that doesn’t include an estimated $100 million in marketing/P&A. The film also reportedly never test-screened.

The reviews out of the world premiere at Cannes really do appear to have had an impact as projections for the film didn’t shift despite the heavy marketing push, long list of promotional partners, and plenty of press being done by the actors and director James Mangold.
