New “Transformers” Targets $60 Million Debut

Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures’ “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” the 1990s-set seventh entry in the franchise about those robots in disguise, is reportedly on track for a $50-60 million domestic opening weekend this weekend.

The film is set to open in 3,700 North American theatres, but faces a real challenger in the form of Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” which launched to $120 million and looks to add at least a further $45-55 million in its second weekend.

That’s a step up from the last two installments with “Bumblebee” taking $21.6 million, whilst 2017’s “Transformers: The Last Knight” debuted to $44.68 million.

It has also been hit by mixed reviews at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, though that still puts it way ahead of all be the Michael Bay-directed se quels and not far off the 57% of the first film. It’s certainly no “Bumblebee” though at 91%.

Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”) helmed the film, which cost $200 million, meaning it needs to both have legs and play well globally to make its money back (the franchise does over two-thirds of its business overseas).

The last two films made between $500-605 million, with analysts predicting the new film will end up somewhere within that range. All are a far cry from the franchise’s heyday when it regularly pulled in over $1 billion at the box-office.

Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback star along with a number of major actors in supporting voice roles. Check out those in a new featurette below.
