Back in September last year, filming wrapped on the third season of Netflix’s “The Witcher” after a five-month shoot. It would be another month before news broke of leading man Henry Cavill’s departure and his being replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
At the time came a report indicating the intention was to make the show’s fourth and fifth seasons back to back with both runs written at the same time and then filmed at the same time.
It’s hardly unheard of, especially for Netflix, as they effectively shot three seasons of “Vikings: Valhalla” back to back with only brief breaks in between.
Now, speaking with Deadline, the show’s casting director Sophie Holland has officially confirmed the report indicating Hemsworth and his co-stars will be returning for a fifth season. Holland, who also worked on “Wednesday” and “Shadow and Bone,” says:
“We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth, and there will be a short gap, then we go straight into season five.”
Series showrunner Lauren Schmidt recently talked about ending the show after Cavill’s departure but told Total Film there were “just too many stories left to tell.”
The third season of “The Witcher” arrives on Netflix in two parts, with the first hitting on June 29th and the second a month later.
