Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” remake swum away with $10.3 million in Thursday night previews ahead of the Memorial Day long weekend holiday in the United States.
The Halle Bailey-led film, which boasts a budget of around $250 million, is projected to open with $100 million for the three-day and just over $120 million for the four-day holiday weekend domestically.
That’s a strong showing, better than the live-action “Aladdin” which opened to $91 million in its debut domestic weekend, but far behind the $191 million the live-action “The Lion King” made in its cinema debut.
The film is also expected to pull in at least $80 million from overseas markets for the weekend, bringing its worldwide debut total to around $200 million.
“The Little Mermaid” is easily expected to beat “Fast “X” which this weekend will move to second place with estimates pegging it at an estimated $27-30 million sophomore run domestically. The film has managed to help the “Fast and Furious” franchise to cross the $7 billion mark this week.
The live-action “The Little Mermaid” cast includes Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the crab, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder the fish and Awkwafina as Scuttle the seabird.
“The Little Mermaid” is now playing in cinemas everywhere.
