Warner Bros. Discovery says it will correct the changes it made to director and writer credits of its content library in its Max rollout this week.
On Tuesday night, shortly after the launch of the rebranded HBO Max service, now known simply as Max, film fans quickly discovered films no longer listed writers or directors specifically.
Instead, they were all lumped together into a category titled ‘Creators’ with no real ordering to the names. This resulted in titles like “Man of Steel” showing its director Zack Snyder as the sixth most important ‘creator’ involved in that film.
The faux pas was quickly met with major blowback from both the currently in-negotiations Directors Guild and the already striking Writers Guild.
Both guilds issued very strongly worded statements about the change, the DGA calling the move a “grave insult” and planning to take the “strongest possible actions” to reverse it. The WGA dubbed it “disrespectful and insulting”.
Now, in a statement today, Max said: “We agree that the talent behind the content on Max deserves their work to be properly recognized. We will correct the credits, which were altered due to an oversight in the technical transition from HBO Max to Max and we apologize for this mistake.”
How long the correction will take to implement service-wide is not clear.
