Indira Varma Joins “Doctor Who”

HBO

“Game of Thrones,” “Luther,” “Carnival Row” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” alum Indira Varma is returning to the world of “Doctor Who”.

Varma takes on the mysterious new role of The Duchess, joining other faces like “Mindhunter” alum Jonathan Groff, “Dunkirk” lead Aneurin Barnard, and “Drag Race” winner Jinkx Monsoon who have been announced as guest stars.

The new season of the series marks the first to feature Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and his new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).

After more than a decade absence, Russell T Davies returns as showrunner for the new run which will air on The BBC in the UK and on Disney+ everywhere else.

Years ago, Varma appeared on the first season of the Davies-created “Doctor Who” spin-off series “Torchwood” in the role of Suzie Costello. In a statement, she says:

“I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him. I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T Davies in Torchwood so am thrilled to be entering this world again.”

Varma will soon be seen playing Empress Natalya in Max’s “Dune: The Sisterhood” series and voicing Bride of Frankenstein in James Gunn’s animated DC series “Creature Commandos”.
