The sequel to 2021’s “Mortal Kombat” is moving to the other side of the continent.
Inside Film reports that “Mortal Kombat 2” is set to shoot at the Village Roadshow Studios complex on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.
That’s a big shift from the prior filming which took place at Adelaide Studios in South Australia. The first film made good use of the deserts of South Australia. This shift could suggest more leafy environs for the sequel, and certainly a bigger scale as it’s a much larger facility.
It marks the latest major Hollywood production at the complex, which most recently housed next year’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” along with recent hits “Ticket to Paradise,” “Thirteen Lives,” “Elvis,” “Aquaman” and “Thor: Ragnarok”.
Director Simon McQuoid and producer James Wan are once again returning for the New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures film which will claim the Producer Offset.
The sequel continues the story of a group of ragtag fighters, versed in the ways of martial arts, who defend our reality against the forces of Outworld in a fighting tournament. Tati Gabrielle will play Jade and Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage in the film, joining returnees such as Jessica McNamee as Sonya.
The first film included cast members Josh Lawson as Kano, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax and Lewis Tan as Cole Young. It’s currently not clear which of them is returning.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says: “My government’s support for the state’s screen industry continues to pay dividends, with Mortal Kombat 2 the latest in a long line of high-profile films to be made here.”
Jeremy Slater penned the script whilst Wan, McQuoid, Michael Clear and E. Bennett Walsh produce. Filming is expected to start next month and the production is expected to spend $68 million and create 560 jobs.
