“Fast & Furious” Franchise Gets A Big Returnee

Universal Pictures

WARNING: MINOR POTENTIAL SPOILER AHEAD FOR “FAST X”

Despite seemingly vowing never to return, it has been revealed Dwayne Johnson and his Luke Hobbs character reportedly make an appearance in the post-credits sequence for the upcoming “Fast X” at Universal Pictures.

The Wrap broke the story, the reveal now being widely spread this afternoon across the media including TMZ, Cinema Blend, Yahoo and Screen Rant. This would seem to mark something of an end to a six-year public squabble between Vin Diesel and Johnson and certainly shows the value of having Johnson in a ‘Fast Saga’ film.

The film series reached its apex with the success of “Fast Five”, which introduced Johnson’s character – since that point, every entry has been seen as a major event movie upon its release. Johnson exited after the eighth film, jumping over to the spin-off film “Hobbs & Shaw”.

In November 2021 took to Instagram to effectively beg Johnson to return to the mainline franchise. Johnson told CNN shortly after:

“I told [Diesel] directly that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful but that there was no chance I would return.

Vin’s recent public post was an example of his manipulation. I didn’t like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker’s death. Leave them out of it. We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding.”

Now it would appear Johnson has changed his mind. The actor has had a slightly rough period of late with disappointments like the widely panned (but also widely seen) “Red Notice” and the disappointing results for “Black Adam”.

“Fast X” is set for release next Friday with an opening weekend projected to be around $70 million – which would put it on par with the opening of the last film.

Also today, Giant Freakin Robot reports Johnson will re-team with “Fast Five” helmer Justin Lin for the sci-fi action blockbuster “The Vanguard” at Sony Pictures. That film sees Johnson as a soldier leading a team of elite fighters trying to stop an alien invasion.
