“Spider-Verse 2” Aims For $70-80M Launch

Sony Pictures Animation

Early box-office tracking figures are in for Sony Pictures Animation’s highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” with the film set for a very healthy debut.

The sequel to Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is set for a domestic opening weekend in the $70-80 million range over the June 2nd-4th weekend.

That’s essentially double the $35.6 million opening weekend debut of the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-produced first film. Thanks to incredible reviews and word of mouth, that film managed to continue on to an ultimate worldwide haul of $384.2 million.

The Stephen King adaptation “The Boogeyman” also opens that weekend and is headed for a $19-26 million debut. Both films will follow in the wake of “The Little Mermaid” opening in late May which is targeting a $70-90 million three-day haul, and “Fast X” next week, which is tracking for a $63-73 million opening weekend.

Lord and Miller are returning as producers and writers on the Spider-Verse follow-up, with David Callaham also writing the screenplay. Co-director Kemp Powers has confirmed to SFX Magazine the film will end on a bit of a cliffhanger which leads into “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” opening next year.
