“Strange” Scribes Hadn’t Seen “WandaVision”

The shift of TV series to being under the Marvel Studios umbrella was supposed to see a much more integrated small and big-screen Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No longer would the creative elements be a one-way street in which films could impact the series, but not vice versa. So it was a surprise when Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff showed up as the villain of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”.

Olsen scored rave reviews for her performance in the “WandaVision” series, getting time to explore Wanda’s grief and giving her character a natural arc. Cut to ‘Multiverse’ where the character suddenly appears as a straight-up Marvel villain.

It definitely felt like those involved in those productions weren’t aware or communicating with each other about what the other was doing. Olsen, speaking with Vanity Fair, has now pretty much confirmed that is the case:

“It’s a similar arc in Multiverse of Madness that it is in Wandavision. There could be parallel stories being told there of dealing with grief and loss.

Well, I proposed that to the writers who wrote Multiverse of Madness. I said ‘Do you know what we’re doing in WandaVision? Have you seen it?’ and no, they had not seen it because it wasn’t finished yet.

So I had to try and, I don’t know, play it differently, right? I had to attack the same themes in order for it to be interesting for me, I think, and potentially for the audience. I had to come at it from a different point of view so that it wasn’t repetitive.”

It’s not clear if Olsen will return to the role in the upcoming Disney+ series “Agatha: Coven of Chaos” which is currently shooting in Atlanta.
