Don’t Expect More Netflix Films In Cinemas

Whilst Amazon and Apple are dipping their toes into the waters of theatrical exclusivity windows with films like “Air” and the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Netflix seems to be done with the idea with no plans to expand upon what they’re already doing.

The streaming giant has made a few attempts with theatrical runs – most notably the “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” one-week-only cinema release his past Thanksgiving, which was seen as a success.

In an earnings call Tuesday, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos says the company’s film division is doing great and says there are no plans to change up their approach for now, such as upping their theatrical release plans.

He says whilst you could make a comparison between Netflix and other services who’ve begun to try this, he says those services don’t have the same scale and reach as Netflix does:

“Driving folks to a theater is just not our business. Having big new desirable content drives value for our members and drives value for our business. There are no major changes in play.”

For several years, Netflix has given many of its original movies, especially any awards contender, a limited release on the big screen. That will probably continue still as it has worked for them and seen films like “All Quiet on the Western Front ” and “The Power of the Dog” score multiple Oscar nominations.

Amazon began its new theatrical plans with Ben Affleck’s “Air” earlier this month, which scored a traditional wide cinema release with a theatrical window. It snagged major critical acclaim, but its $54 million global haul is seen as soft.

Netflix has a strong 2023 slate, including David Fincher’s highly-anticipated new film “The Killer” starring Michael Fassbender, Zack Snyder’s space opera epic “Rebel Moon,” and the psychological thriller “Leave the World Behind” with Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali.
