“Mario” Box-Office Continues To Jaw Drop

Illumination

Universal and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has beaten all estimates yet again.

With final numbers for the weekend in, the Nintendo video game adaptation ended up grossing a massive $92.5 million domestically over the weekend – considerably more than the $80 million estimates being thrown about on Saturday and $87 million on Sunday.

As a result, the film had only a second-weekend drop of just 37% and easily overtook the old “Frozen 2” record at $86 million to become the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film. Overseas the drop was even more impressive at under 28%, with a second-weekend foreign gross of $102.5 million.

Through Sunday, the film has grossed $353.3 million domestically and a further $339.8 million overseas for a global tally of $693.1 million through Sunday. It has already crossed $700 million as of today.

It all follows on from the animated feature smashing numerous records in its launch over the long Easter holiday and becoming the top-grossing movie of the year so far both domestically and worldwide after just one week along with becoming the top-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

With such small drops, it’s not clear what sort of total gross for the film we’re looking at now, though that total being well above $1 billion is a certainty.
