“Little Mermaid” Remake Gets Large Runtime

Disney Pictures

Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” is continuing the trend of long blockbusters this year, with the film reportedly set to be the longest live-action Disney remake to date.

According to a new listing from AMC Theaters, the underwater musical epic is reportedly clocking in at 135 minutes long (2 hours and 15 minutes). That’s just over the previous record holder 2021’s “Cruella” at 134 minutes.

What’s especially surprising is it comes in considerably longer than its animated predecessor, with the 1989 film clocking in at just 83 minutes – nearly an hour shorter. Rumors out of test screenings have dubbed this the ‘best Disney remake’ though we’ll have to wait and see about that.

Rob Marshall helms the film about Ariel (Halle Bailey), a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea. While visiting the surface, she falls for the dashing Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King).

While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The cast also includes Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Art Malik Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina and Javier Bardem as King Triton.

The live-action “The Little Mermaid” is scheduled to score a wide release in cinemas on May 26th.
