Earlier in the week, Lucasfilm confirmed “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will mark the end of the franchise.
With the planned spin-off Disney+ series cancelled and no plans for a recasting or reboot (at least for now), Harrison Ford’s final outing in the role appears to be the swan song for Dr. Jones as Lucasfilm shifts its focus seemingly entirely to “Star Wars” projects.
In the wake of the final trailer’s release on Friday at Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy has done some brief press and revealed that the new film would be the longest in the series to date – continuing a trend of long blockbusters this year.
Kennedy tells Collider the film clocks in at around 142 minutes long – nearly 15 minutes longer than the previous longest entry with 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” at 128 minutes. The runtime is more in line with a “Star Wars” film, clocking in at the same length as ‘Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Rise of Skywalker’.
The “Indiana Jones” franchise has otherwise been pretty consistently around the two-hour mark over the years – ‘Raiders’ came in at 115 minutes, ‘Temple of Doom’ at 118 minutes, and ‘Crystal Skull’ at 122 minutes.
The new film is set in 1969 and sees a long-retired Dr. Jones teaming with his goddaughter on an adventure to stop a former Nazi he knew from obtaining the ‘Dial of Destiny’, an artifact of supernatural power that the trailer strongly hints at will revolve around time travel.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” arrives in cinemas on June 30th.
