Paramount+ has officially ordered another “Star Trek” TV series, this one set at Starfleet Academy.
The project has reportedly spent more than a year in development, with the streamer today green-lighting the project and releasing a description of the show.
Said description suggests this one will skew more young adult audience targeted and more soapy than the usual “Star Trek” (so more like a series on The CW?).
Noga Landau (“Nancy Drew”) will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer along with franchise chief Alex Kurtzman. The pair replace “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl” executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, who were originally attached. The new series is described thus:
“Starfleet Academy will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
The move follows a shift in the Trek landscape at Paramount+ with both “Picard” and “Star Trek: Discovery” about to come to an end. The streamer recently ordered more “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” which will get new seasons both this year and next.
Production on the new series won’t begin until next year and will likely not go to air until sometime in 2025.
