“Indiana Jones 5” Aims For Cannes Premiere

Lucasfilm

The highly anticipated “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” looks to be this year’s major Hollywood blockbuster premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the way “Top Gun: Maverick” was last year on the Croisette.

Variety reports that the festival has invited the film to screen there and under plans currently being discussed, it will likely premiere early in the festival’s run around May 17th-18th.

This wouldn’t be the first time Indy has shown up at Cannes. Steven Spielberg’s 2008 fourth entry in the series, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” premiered at the festival that year.

Set in 1969 New York, the film will somehow tie in with Operation Paperclip (Nazi scientists given amnesty by the U.S. Government in exchange for their scientific knowledge) and the space race against the Soviet Union.

American archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is now mostly retired but is uneasy over the aforementioned arrangement. Meanwhile, Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) – a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program, wishes to make the world into a better place as he sees fit.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge co-stars as Indiana Jones’ goddaughter, Helena, who accompanies him on his journey this time. Also starring are Antonio Banderas as an old friend of Indy’s, John Rhys-Davies reprising his role of Sallah, Boyd Holbrook as some kind of villain, along with Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, and Toby Jones.

The James Mangold-directed ‘Dial of Destiny’ will join numerous other major Hollywood films expected to have a presence at this year’s fest with Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” also potentially debuting.

The festival’s Official Selection will be unveiled on April 13th. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” opens in cinemas everywhere on June 30th.
