James Gunn Set To Direct “Superman: Legacy”

Warner Bros. Pictures

Its been rumored and now it’s official, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn will both direct and write the upcoming “Superman: Legacy”.

The film marks the first effort in Gunn and DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran’s new initiative that is mapping out the course of the DC film and TV universe over the next decade.

The story will follow a younger Superman in his early days and at a point with Clark Kent early in his career – which is why Henry Cavill isn’t returning to the role. Gunn has been working on the script for some time, well before the new slate was announced in late January.

In a statement on Twitter, Gunn explains a bit about how he came to the decision:

“Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11th 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized.

It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.

Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

Gunn recently squashed casting rumors surrounding the role as he indicated a casting director hasn’t even been hired as yet. “Superman: Legacy” is the only film from the slate to have a set release date and is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 11th 2025.
