Despite all its various characters, the celebrated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” essentially took place in one dimension – the world of its hero Miles Morales.
Sure there were glimpses of other worlds, but the story saw variations of Spider-Man from other worlds coming to the one that Miles resides in. That changes with the upcoming sequel “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”.
The new film expands the scope of the Spider-Verse considerably as the animators and filmmakers try and break new ground where they can. As writer-producer Christopher Miller tells Empire: “The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension. This is about Miles heading off into others.”
That is resulting in a story that spends considerable time in five different universes over its runtime. Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos says: “Each world is a robust place, we’ve essentially made five films in one.”
The worlds are Gwen’s Earth-65 which boasts a watercolor palette, the India-inspired Mumbattan, Nueva York which is Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 home, New London which is Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk home, and a fifth world being “kept tightly under wraps for now”.
Writer-producer Phil Lord says: “It goes hard. The visuals will be jaw-dropping.” Actor Shameik Moore, who plays Miles, says it isn’t just the visuals that get upgraded but the storytelling too: “This story tops the first one. If the sky was the limit last time, the sky is now the floor. We’re stepping on it and looking at Jupiter.”
The new film follows Miles Morales as he is catapulted across the Multiverse & encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders.
“Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” opens in cinemas on June 2nd.
